Privacy Policy
Porterstone Learning LLC d/b/a Focus Period, a Michigan limited liability company with its principal place of business at 8597 Eldora Drive SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315 (“Company,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy and safeguarding student and educator information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you visit our website at https://www.focusperiod.com/ and use our Focus Period education scheduling and intervention software (collectively, the “Service”).
Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By accessing or using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to the practices described herein.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information directly from you, automatically through your device when you browse our site, and through participating educational institutions:
- Contact & Account Information: Name, school or district name, professional email address, telephone number, job title, and login credentials provided during account creation, demo requests, or customer support inquiries.
- Educational & Student Data: School-related scheduling, attendance, intervention tracking, and classroom data provided by school administrators, teachers, or staff. Where student records are involved, Company acts as a “school official” with a “legitimate educational interest” under the FERPA school official exception (34 C.F.R. § 99.31(a)(1)(i)(B)) — a characterization the Company applies consistently throughout this Policy — and handles student data in compliance with applicable federal and state student privacy laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Technical & Usage Data: IP addresses, browser types, operating systems, access times, pages viewed, referring URLs, and diagnostic data collected automatically via our website hosting provider (Webflow) and analytics tools.
- Cookies and Tracking Technologies: Standard web technologies used to preserve user sessions, store preferences, and optimize system performance.
- Children’s & Student Privacy: The Company does not knowingly collect personal information directly from students or children. All student data is provided by, and collected on behalf of, participating educational institutions rather than solicited from students themselves. To the extent the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies, the Company relies on the consent obtained by the school acting in loco parentis and complies with COPPA’s requirements where applicable.
2. How We Use Your Information
Company uses collected information strictly for operational and educational purposes, including to:
- Provide, maintain, update, and secure the Focus Period scheduling and intervention platform.
- Facilitate student-teacher scheduling, intervention tracking, and administrator oversight.
- Respond to customer service inquiries, technical support, and demonstration requests.
- Communicate administrative announcements, updates, security alerts, and system releases.
- Ensure platform security, investigate software anomalies, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- Consistent with our commitment not to sell, rent, or monetize personal or educational data, we will not use student data for targeted advertising, nor to build a personal profile of any student except in furtherance of a legitimate educational purpose.
3. Disclosure & Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, or monetize personal or educational data under any circumstances. We disclose information only in the following limited situations:
- Authorized School Users: Information entered into the platform is made accessible to authorized administrators, teachers, and staff within the relevant school or district account.
- Third-Party Service Providers: Trusted vendor services that perform core operational infrastructure tasks on our behalf (such as cloud hosting through Webflow, database storage, or customer communication tools) under strict confidentiality obligations.
- Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, subpoena, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of Company, our users, or the public.
- Business Transfers: In connection with any actual or proposed merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business by another company.
4. Security & Data Protection
We implement administrative, physical, and technical safeguards designed to protect personal and educational data against unauthorized access, destruction, loss, or alteration. While we maintain industry-standard security measures, no data transmission over the Internet or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.
Data Breach Notification: In the event of a security breach involving the unauthorized access to or acquisition of personal or educational data, we will notify affected schools, districts, and, where required, affected individuals without unreasonable delay and in accordance with Michigan's Identity Theft Protection Act (MCL 445.72) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Data Retention & Deletion: We retain personal and educational data only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service or as required by applicable law. Upon termination of a school or district account, or upon the authorized request of a school, we will delete or return student and educational data within a commercially reasonable period, except where continued retention is required by law.
5. Educational Privacy Compliance
Company complies with applicable laws governing student records:
- FERPA Compliance: To the extent student data is handled within Focus Period, we act as a school official with a legitimate educational interest performing institutional services on behalf of schools, consistent with Section 1 above, and we comply with applicable Michigan student-data-privacy obligations and maintain strict confidentiality controls.
- Data Ownership: Schools retain full ownership of all student data uploaded to or generated within the platform.
- De-Identified & Aggregate Data: We may create and use de-identified or aggregate data that does not reasonably identify any student or individual in order to operate, support, analyze, and improve the Service, provided that such data has been stripped of personally identifiable information and that we will not attempt to re-identify it.
6. Your Rights and Choices

Cookies and Opt-Out Choices: As described in Section 1, we use cookies and similar tracking technologies to preserve user sessions, store your preferences, and optimize system performance. Most web browsers allow you to refuse, disable, or delete cookies through your browser settings; however, disabling cookies may limit your ability to use certain features of the Service.
